Responsible Gambling

Last updated 18 September 2026

Betting should be entertainment you can afford. When it stops being that, help is free, confidential, and available at any hour.

Get help now

  • Call or text 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537) — the National Problem Gambling Helpline. Free, confidential, 24/7, all 50 states.
  • Chat online at 1800gamblerchat.org.
  • More support from the National Council on Problem Gambling at ncpgambling.org, including a treatment-provider directory.
  • Gamblers Anonymous meetings, in person and online, at gamblersanonymous.org.

Signs it has stopped being entertainment

  • Betting more than you meant to, or more than you can afford to lose.
  • Chasing losses — increasing stakes to win back what you have lost.
  • Borrowing money, selling things, or using bill money to bet.
  • Lying to people close to you about how much you bet.
  • Betting to escape stress, boredom or low mood.
  • Feeling anxious, irritable or restless when you try to stop.

If several of those sound familiar, talk to someone today. The helpline above is not only for emergencies and you do not have to be in crisis to use it.

Staying in control

  • Set a budget before you start, treat it as the cost of entertainment, and stop when it is gone.
  • Never bet money you need for rent, bills, food or debts.
  • Do not chase. A losing run is not a reason to stake more.
  • Use the tools your sportsbook offers — deposit limits, time limits, cool-off periods and self-exclusion. Every licensed US operator has them.
  • Take breaks, and keep betting a small part of your life rather than the organising part of it.

What LockBetting is

We publish opinions and analysis, and we publish our record honestly, including the losing months. We are not a sportsbook, we do not take bets, and we cannot promise you a profit — no tipster can. If anyone ever guarantees you'll win, that's the moment to walk away.

You must be 18 or over to use LockBetting, and old enough to bet legally where you live, which in most of the United States means 21.
